🎆 Your Game Plan for the Fourth on Hollywood Beach

America's 250th lands on Saturday, and Hollywood Beach will be packed for the Star-Spangled Spectacular (live music from 6, offshore fireworks at 9). A little planning makes the day.

Parking on the barrier island is first-come, first-served, with a $30 flat 24-hour rate at the Garfield and Nebraska garages, so arrive early or take the free downtown shuttle. Expect one-way traffic patterns, and the Intracoastal bridges stay down from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. to move cars off the beach after the show.

Pack light (chairs and blankets yes; glass, coolers, and personal fireworks no), bring water, and give yourself extra time. Full details are on the city's site.

1. ⚽ Tomorrow at Hard Rock: Messi's Argentina in the Round of 32

The World Cup knockouts hit our backyard tomorrow. Reigning champions Argentina face Cape Verde in the Round of 32 at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday, July 3 at 6 p.m., about 15 minutes from Hollywood.

Tickets are scarce and pricey, so most of us will watch from a barstool, and downtown Hollywood and Gulfstream's watch spots have been packed for every match. Expect the same buzz Friday.

Win and Argentina advances to the Round of 16, the marquee match of Hard Rock's knockout slate before the July 18 Bronze Final.

2. 💧 A Hallandale Flood Fix Just Got Vetoed, Again

Just as Hollywood commits $1 billion to stormwater, a neighbor's flood project lost state help. Gov. DeSantis vetoed more than $23 million in South Florida water and flood-mitigation projects from the new state budget, including $2 million for Hallandale Beach.

The money would have rebuilt two stormwater pump stations in the city's lowest-lying, most flood-prone quadrant (the Northeast Quad Injection Well System). It's the second year running the project has been vetoed.

The city will now weigh whether to fund the work another way, a reminder of how much of South Florida's flood fight rides on year-to-year budget calls.

3. ✈️ A New Nonstop Is Coming to Fort Lauderdale

More options out of FLL: Avelo Airlines is adding nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and North Dallas, flying to McKinney National Airport starting November 19.

It's part of Avelo's new McKinney base, which will also link that airport to Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, and Las Vegas. The FLL flights run on 184-seat Boeing 737s.

Still months out, but one to file away if you've got Texas travel, or Texans headed our way this winter.

4. 🌊 Checking the Beach Before the Big Weekend

Quick conditions check before the holiday: the sargassum seaweed is running heavy. Scientists say 2026 could be one of the worst seasons on record, and June and July are the peak, so some stretches (Dania Beach's parks have been hit hard) may have piles and that rotten-egg smell.

It's harmless in the water and shifts daily with the winds, so if your spot looks buried, try a freshly groomed stretch or go early.

None of it should cancel your beach day, just know before you go.

🛠️ A New Law Means Some Home Projects No Longer Need a Permit

Good news for DIY homeowners: as of July 1, a new state law (House Bill 803) lets owners of single-family homes, or their contractors, do qualifying residential work under $7,500 without pulling a building permit.

Think cosmetic upgrades: painting, flooring, cabinetry, drywall, fence repairs, minor siding, screen-enclosure fixes. What's still NOT exempt: anything electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical, or gas, and any work on a property in a flood-hazard area (which covers a lot of our coastline).

The fine print: you still file a written exemption request with the city showing the work and its value, and you can't split a big job into smaller ones to duck the $7,500 cap.
