🌤️ TODAY'S WEATHER - Monday, July 6
🌡️ High: ~92° | Feels like 105° | Afternoon storms likely
A hot, sticky start to the week with a heat advisory in play - feels-like temps near 105 by midday, so hydrate and find shade. Scattered showers and storms fire up in the afternoon (about a 60% chance), heaviest inland. Beach early, keep an indoor plan for the pop-ups, and save your energy for that 8 PM kickoff.

TODAY'S TOP STORY

The World Cup's Round of 16 has been pure drama, and tonight the USA takes center stage. The US men face Belgium at 8 p.m. (in Seattle), chasing the national team's first quarterfinal in 24 years. It won't be easy: Belgium has won the last six meetings, including a 5-2 result in March, and the US will be without suspended striker Folarin Balogun. But a home tournament and a raucous crowd count for a lot.
Before that, another heavyweight: Spain vs Portugal, the Iberian derby, kicks off at 3 p.m. And the weekend already served up a stunner - Erling Haaland and Norway knocked out five-time champions Brazil, who miss the quarterfinals for the first time in 36 years. This bracket is wide open.
No match at Hard Rock today, so it's a barstool affair. Downtown Hollywood, the Gulfstream watch spots, and Mickey Byrne's Irish Pub have packed out all tournament, and Margaritaville and the Broadwalk sports bars will have the USA game on. Grab a seat early, and let's go USA.

📰 NEWS & STORIES

Our shrinking shoreline is getting a major refill. Broward County, working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has launched a long-awaited renourishment project that will pump roughly 887,000 cubic yards of sand onto the beaches of Dania Beach, Hollywood, Hallandale, and the state park in between.
Here's the problem it fixes: about 85% of Florida's tidal erosion happens at inlets like Port Everglades, where sand drifting south gets funneled out to sea instead of restocking the beaches below it. This project, paired with a new sand-bypass system at the Port, is meant to break that cycle and keep South Broward's sand where it belongs.
The best part for locals: it's a 100% federal cost share, and crews aim to wrap the work by 2027. Wider beaches, better storm protection, and no bill for residents.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International just picked up a wave of new flights. Frontier Airlines this week launched nonstop service from FLL to Baltimore/Washington, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Detroit, with Charlotte and Houston coming online within days - eight routes in all, many of them recently dropped by Spirit.
It's a notable shift in our backyard. Spirit, long a South Florida mainstay, is retrenching to just four core markets (Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Detroit, and New York) as it works through financial trouble, and Frontier is moving fast to grab the routes it's leaving behind. To mark the launch, Frontier is dangling introductory fares starting at $39.
For anyone flying out of FLL this summer, it means more nonstop options - and, for a while at least, some very cheap seats.

Looking for an easy Monday-night plan? Food In Motion brings its monthly Food Truck Monday to ArtsPark at Young Circle tonight, with 20-plus trucks lined up from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Entry is free.
It's the first-Monday tradition that turns downtown Hollywood's 10-acre park into a giant open-air food court - everything from tacos and arepas to barbecue and desserts. Bring a blanket, let the kids loose on the splash pad and playground under the baobab trees, and graze your way down the row. Parking is cheap ($1.50/hour on the street, $1/hour in the garage).
A relaxed, wallet-friendly way to start the week, and a good excuse to skip cooking.

Back to the grind? The Broadwalk is the antidote. Our 2.5-mile brick promenade is at its summer best right now, best enjoyed early, before the midday heat and afternoon storms roll in.
The free Hollywood Beach Theatre live music returns Wednesday (it's dark Monday and Tuesday), running Wednesday through Sunday, 7 to 9 p.m. on the Broadwalk at Johnson Street - this week featuring Stella Fusion's Latin dance party (Wed) and blues-rocker Mark Telesca (Thu). For food, the Broadwalk classics deliver: grab a slice, a Cuban coffee, or an early-bird breakfast with your toes near the sand.
Come for the ocean breeze, a bike ride, or a sunrise walk, and beat the crowds while you're at it.

SPOTLIGHT: Beating the Heat

South Florida is baking. A heat advisory has feels-like temperatures pushing 105 this week, and it's the kind of heat that sneaks up on you. A few easy ways to stay ahead of it: drink water before you're thirsty, take midday breaks in the shade or the A/C, wear light colors, and never leave kids or pets in a parked car, even for a minute.
Need an escape? Duck into the $1 summer movies at Regal Dania Pointe (11 a.m., Monday-Thursday), cool off at a splash pad (ArtsPark's is free), or hit an air-conditioned mall for the afternoon. If you do go to the beach, aim for early morning or after 5, bring extra water, and keep an eye on the little ones. Stay cool, Hollywood.
