🌤️ TODAY'S WEATHER - Wednesday, July 8

🌡️ High: ~92° | Feels like 105-108° | Hazy from Saharan dust
Hot and hazy as Saharan dust moves in - skies turn milky, rain chances drop, and temperatures climb. A slight chance of a morning shower (around 10-11 a.m.), otherwise mostly sunny with feels-like readings well into the 100s. Heat advisories are likely, so hydrate, find shade midday, and take it easy outdoors.

TODAY'S TOP STORY

If the sky looks a little milky this week, you’re not imagining it. A plume of Saharan dust that traveled all the way across the Atlantic is moving into South Florida, the National Weather Service in Miami said Tuesday - and the City of Hollywood shared the alert. It’s a routine summer visitor: this happens several times each July and August.

What it means for us: hazier, “milkier” skies (often with those richer sunrises and sunsets), lower rain chances, and higher temperatures. That last part is the catch - the dust arrives just as feels-like temperatures are pushing 105 to 110 across Broward, so heat advisories are likely midweek into the weekend.

The playbook is the same as always: hydrate before you’re thirsty, take midday breaks in the shade or A/C, wear light colors, and never leave kids or pets in a parked car. Got outdoor plans? Aim for early morning or after 5. Stay cool out there.

📰 NEWS & STORIES

The World Cup’s knockout rounds roll on, and this weekend one of the biggest stages comes to South Florida. Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens hosts a quarterfinal on Saturday, July 11 at 5 p.m. - Norway vs England, two of the tournament’s in-form sides. Erling Haaland’s Norway stunned Brazil to get here; Jude Bellingham’s England edged Mexico at the Azteca.

It’s a hot ticket, literally and figuratively: resale prices have been running well into the thousands, and with demand soaring, officials warn that ticket scams are spiking - buy only through official channels.

Can’t make it to the stadium? Downtown Hollywood, the Gulfstream watch spots, and Mickey Byrne’s have packed out all tournament, and the city’s big Final watch party downtown is set for July 19. It’s a great summer to be a soccer fan in South Florida.

A little momentum to report from the heart of the city. Downtown Hollywood’s apartment market is finding its footing: vacancy dropped from about 21% to 16.9% in the latest quarter, and more than 750 units were absorbed over the past year, according to the city’s new development report.

Zoom out and the picture is even bigger - there’s nearly $1.5 billion in real estate completed, planned, or under construction across Hollywood right now, with the downtown and beach corridors leading the way.

Translation for locals: more neighbors, more storefronts filling in, and more reasons for the restaurants, shops, and Friday-night crowds along Harrison Street and the Broadwalk. Growth brings growing pains, but downtown’s trend lines are pointing up.

Downtown’s dining scene is about to get another anchor. Common Room, a new American restaurant and cocktail bar from BOL Hospitality Group, is opening this summer at 2032 Harrison Street, near Young Circle in the heart of downtown Hollywood.

The pitch is comfort food with polish - lobster rolls, fried chicken, French dip, and slow-braised short rib from Executive Chef Tanya Evans (Barton G, Major Food Group), plus supper-club-inspired cocktails in a warm space of vintage touches, brass accents, and floral details. There’s even a twist: a hidden, invitation-only speakeasy called the Brooklyn Room tucked behind the dining room.

No firm opening date yet, but it’s one to watch - another sign that downtown’s momentum (see above) is showing up on the ground.

Looking for a cheap night out? The Village at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach is running free entertainment almost every night this summer at Champions Plaza.

The weekly rundown: Tunes on Tuesday (live music from 6 p.m.), Music in the Park with rotating bands Wednesday through Sunday (6:30-9:30 p.m.), Latin Nights on Thursdays with a free salsa lesson at 6 and dancing to 9, and Kids Night Out on Fridays with family entertainment. There’s also a Summer Music Series at the plaza on Wednesday and Saturday nights.

It’s all free, family-friendly, and a short drive south - grab dinner, catch a set, and let the kids loose. An easy weeknight win.

SPOTLIGHT: Cinema Paradiso

Here’s a downtown perk worth putting on the calendar. Every Tuesday, Hollywood residents get $9 movie tickets and a free small popcorn at Cinema Paradiso Hollywood, the indie theater inside the Art and Culture Center at 2008 Hollywood Boulevard.

It’s a great low-cost family night or date night - first-run and independent films in a cozy downtown setting, steps from Harrison Street’s restaurants and shops. Bring your ID to show residency, grab that free popcorn, and make a night of it. Showtimes are posted at centerhollywood.org/cinema - catch a movie and support a local arts institution.
