🎉 Juneteenth Today - Why This Day Still Matters and What It Means for Our Community
Today is Juneteenth - and it's worth taking a moment to understand why this day carries such profound meaning. On June 19, 1865 - more than two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation - federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the order and announce that all enslaved people were free. The news had been deliberately withheld. That long-delayed moment of liberation became the longest-running Black holiday in America and in 2021 was established as a federal holiday. Communities across South Florida are marking today with celebrations, educational programs and cultural events. Dr. Tameka Bradley, regional manager of the African American Research Library & Cultural Center right here in Broward County, told NBC Miami: "The holiday represents an important milestone in American history and serves as an opportunity to reflect on the nation's progress." This year's national theme is "Juneteenth Brings Balance to America's Celebration of Freedom." Today - city offices are closed, the Broadwalk is open, music fills the air in Hallandale Beach at the Juneteenth Freedom Festival, and Hollywood hosts the 10th Annual Juneteenth South Broward Parade tomorrow morning. A day to celebrate, reflect and come together.
