The extreme heat event forecasted by NOAA last week is here - and heat index values could exceed 105°F across South Florida through this week. The City of Hollywood has cooling centers open and available for all residents. Here's what you need to do: drink water constantly even when you don't feel thirsty, limit outdoor activity between 10 AM and 4 PM, wear light-colored loose clothing, check on elderly neighbors and family members, and keep pets indoors away from hot pavement. Signs of heat exhaustion include excessive sweating, dizziness, nausea and a rapid weak pulse. Signs of heat illness include no sweating, body temperature above 103°F and confusion - call 911 immediately. Stay cool, Hollywood - take this one seriously.

1. 🔥 Brush Fires Still Burning South of Hollywood - Roads Now Reopening

Good news on the road front - all lanes along Krome Avenue (SR 997), Tamiami Trail and Southwest 177th Avenue have been reopened following closures caused by the massive brush fires burning in West Miami-Dade County. Florida's Turnpike also had temporary closures now resolved. The fires - which have burned hundreds of acres just south of our area - are still actively burning but firefighting efforts are ongoing. Hollywood and Broward residents may still experience haze and smoke impacts depending on wind direction.

2. 🍔 Common Room Is Coming to Downtown Hollywood - And It Has a Secret Speakeasy

One of the most exciting restaurant openings of Broward's summer is headed straight to Downtown Hollywood. Common Room is setting up at 2032 Harrison St - right in the heart of Downtown Hollywood across from Young Circle. Executive Chef Tanya Evans, whose resume includes Barton G and Major Food Group, leads a menu featuring lobster rolls, fried chicken, French dip sandwiches and slow-braised short rib. But here's the really exciting part - the restaurant also houses the Brooklyn Room, an invitation-only speakeasy hidden behind the main dining room and accessible through a discreet alley entrance. Five days from today - Saturday June 27 at 4 PM - Downtown Hollywood hosts its biggest event ever. Hollywood Boulevard closes from US-1 to 21st Avenue from 7 AM June 27 through 3 AM June 28. Two World Cup matches on giant screens - England vs Panama at 5 PM AND Colombia vs Portugal at 7:30 PM - followed by live concerts from Los Wizzards and AleMor at 9:30 PM. Free parking at City Hall (2600 Hollywood Blvd) with Sun Shuttle service 2 PM to 2 AM. $10 parking at city garages from 3 PM. Entry checkpoints at 19th and 21st Ave. Under 18 must be with a parent or guardian. Arrive early - gates close at maximum capacity.
