🌡️ High: ~90° | Feels like 100°+ | Afternoon storms possible
Typical start-of-summer Monday: hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms likely. Hydrate, grab shade midday, and keep an eye on the radar later. Forecasters are also watching a weak system in the Atlantic, no threat to us right now.

TODAY'S TOP STORY

It's peak sea turtle nesting season on Hollywood Beach, and this year it's running headlong into a record wave of sargassum. June is the heart of nesting for loggerheads, greens, and leatherbacks, the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program logged more than 3,000 nests along the county's 24-mile coast last year, and the University of South Florida says 2026 is on pace to be a record sargassum year.
That's a problem on the sand: thick seaweed mats can block nesting females from coming ashore and trap hatchlings trying to reach the water. Out in the ocean, though, those same floating mats are a nursery, giving baby turtles food and cover.
How to help while it's happening: keep your distance from roped-off nests, don't disturb the seaweed line where hatchlings hide, keep beachfront lights off or turtle-friendly at night, and report any stranded or disoriented turtle to FWC.

📰 NEWS & STORIES

Source: NOAA / National Hurricane Center
Hurricane season is underway, and so far it's quiet. The National Hurricane Center isn't flagging any Atlantic system likely to develop over the next several days, so there's nothing to watch close to home right now.
Forecasters still expect a below-normal season, pointing to a developing El Niño that tends to suppress Atlantic storms. The real daily hazard remains the heat, so keep hydrating and grab midday shade, and use this calm stretch to refresh your storm plan.

Broward County Library has been named the 2026 Florida Library of the Year by the Florida Library Association, and it didn't stop there: it also took the state's Intellectual Freedom Award for its Black History Saturday School at the African American Research Library, plus a Communications Excellence Award.
"Winning Library of the Year is a testament to our staff's dedication," said library director Allison Grubbs. For Hollywood readers, that's your branch on Hollywood Boulevard and the Hollywood Beach reading center, part of an award-winning, and free, system worth a fresh look this summer.

It's an easy, wallet-friendly outing for families and a nice excuse to wander the shops and restaurants after the sun drops. Check their events page for the current lineup.

Downtown Dania Beach is about to get a lot more flavor. Mystic Social Club, a Caribbean restaurant with a hidden speakeasy, has filed its state paperwork to open at 242 E. Dania Beach Boulevard, right in the heart of downtown.
The concept leans into island culture top to bottom: Caribbean food up front, craft cocktails in a tucked-away speakeasy in back, and live entertainment tying it together. The team is targeting a summer 2026 opening and is already hiring a founding crew.

🌟 SPOTLIGHT: From the Weekend

Downtown Hollywood threw its biggest party of the summer Saturday night, shutting Hollywood Boulevard from 19th to 21st Avenue and packing it shoulder-to-shoulder with World Cup fans, most of them in Colombia yellow.
The city projected 7,000 to 10,000 people, roughly double its Copa América watch party two years ago, and organizer Mark Rowe (Downtown Hollywood Business Association president and owner of Mickey Byrne's) said it would be "a massive crowd." Five giant screens carried England vs. Panama and the marquee Colombia vs. Portugal match, with Los Wizzards and AleMor keeping the street loud after the final whistle.
It was also a lifeline for downtown businesses, which usually hit a summer foot-traffic slump. And there's a sequel: the city is hosting one more downtown watch party for the World Cup Final on July 19.
